The Quail Valley Garden Club kicked off the new year with their first board meeting.  Johnny Tamales Restaurant at 2720 FM 1092 (Murphy Road) was the location for the meeting.  Following lunch and some business discussion in a cozy corner of the establishment on Thursday, January 4, 2024, the members introduced themselves to one of the managers, Jesus Zenon.  The Garden Club wanted to make a special effort to check out the new restaurant and welcome Johnny Tamales Restaurant to the community.  The food and service were fantastic.  Additionally, there is a "happy hour" Monday through Friday, 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  If you haven't visited the restaurant, please do so as it is a nice experience.  Please help spread the word.

The Quail Valley Garden Club aims to meet more and more of the business owners in our wonderful community.  Pictured left to right are:  Sandy Cackowski, Cher Binks, Jesus Zenon, Marilyn Moffitt, Lynn Ellis and Charlene Randall.  Missing members are Bonnie Dolson and Deborah Douglas

On January 18, the Quail Valley Garden Club’s Workshop met to create these lovely ceramic calla lilies.  The Workshop meets every other month with new ideas of creativity for members to participate.  The joy and comradery from these fellowship times are immeasurable while also being able to enjoy your creation.

From left to right are:  Cynthia Stewart, Gretchen Cockerill, Nancy Brand, Sandy Cackowski, Deborah Douglas, Ann Money, Lynn Ellis, Clare Murray, Donna Williams, Patsy Colbert and Trudy Edwards

The February speaker was Lauren Martin, Master Gardener, who presented ‘Tips, tricks & Benefits of Companion Planting”.  She commented that companion planting in gardening and agriculture is a form of polyculture.  Her presentation was to introduce how to cultivate and grow two or more compatible plants in a single area.

At a monthly meeting on February 8, the Quail Valley Garden Club celebrated with a Valentine’s theme with decorated meeting tables and a spread of enjoyable goodies prepared by some of its membership volunteers who provided various sweet and savory food items

New Member Luncheon

On Friday, February 9, a social gathering to introduce new garden club members was hosted at the home of Patsy Colbert with the assistance of Marily Moffitt and the Quail Valley leadership.  A new member social is a quarterly affair for newly joined members to attend and get acquainted with the leadership and the functions of the garden club.

YOM NOVEMBER

November 2023 Yard of the Month

The Quail Valley Garden Club presented its November Yard of the Month to winners, Roy and Alma Lloyd on November 6th at Masters Lane. The Lloyds’ purchased their home in 2018 and focused on the Quail Valley community as their place for retirement. Even though a drought has been experienced pretty much all summer, the Lloyd’s yard stands out from all the others. The plants look healthy and the assortment and variations of plants make the landscape “pop”!

Roy is the gardener. Neighbors commented that Roy is working in his yard all the time. His plants are well maintained, flowing with color and assortment. Roy claims that attention to detail and color is very important in placement of the plants. He commented that healthy plants and grass will grow despite the weather.

Prior to purchasing their home, Roy remarked that he visited several garden centers to investigate pricing, color schemes, and availability of certain plants. He further mentioned his love of Sago Palms, and that his design intent was to work around the palms to enhance their beauty and class as a palm.

The garden club presented Mr. Lloyd with a free membership to the Quail Valley Garden Club along with a gift card to Lowe’s and a discount card to Enchanted Forest. Missouri City Councilman, Floyd Emery, presented the homeowner with a Certificate of Appreciation, thanking Mr. Lloyd for setting such a great example to his neighbors in the community by maintaining such a lovely yard.

Left to right are Renee Kross, Charlene Randall, Bonnie Dollson, Cecilia Hernandez, Sandy Cackowski, Roy Lloyd, Councilman Floyd Emery, Linda and Nathan Walker and Deborah Douglas

MESSAGE FROM BROOKWOOD

THANK YOU, QUAIL VALLEY GARDEN CLUB, FOR VOLUNTEERING! WE ARE SO GRATEFUL YOU CAME OUT TO ASSIST US WITH THE POINSETTING RINGS!!! HOPE TO SEE YOU WHEN WE START THE POINSETTIA SLEEVING ON NOVEMBER 19TH – DECEMBER 21ST .

On Saturday, September 23, the Quail Valley Garden Club participated in the Oktoberfest hosted by the City of Missouri City at the Quail Valley Golf Course and City Center Grill. The Oktoberfest was an afternoon of Traditional German food, beer, wonderful music, lederhosen fashion and plenty of games. There was a "Winnie dog" race that won the hearts of everyone. The Quail Valley Garden Club was on hand as a vendor to sell crafts made by the members. These sold items were flameless decorated candles and painted lighted bottles with various decorated themes for the fall and the holidays. This is another fine example of the garden club extending their fundraising efforts through handmade lovely crafts. All fundraising monies are used for scholarship to Elkins students and beautification within Quail Valley.
